Patient Engagement Consultancy
Turning lived experience into meaningful influence
I’m Daniel Newman, a patient engagement consultant, advocate and keynote speaker with lived experience of type 1 diabetes and kidney transplantation. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1996 and received a kidney transplant in 2018. These diagnoses mean that I have lived experience of healthcare systems since childhood. After receiving my kidney transplant something was ignited in me that led me to start sharing my journey and ultimately start my patient advocacy journey.
My work brings together lived experience and professional consultancy to help healthcare, research and life-sciences organisations understand what matters to patients and translate those insights into research, policy, services and practice.
I have been trusted by organisations including NICE, NHS England, Diabetes UK, Diabetes Africa, Roche and Boehringer Ingelheim, contributing to policy updates, advisory boards, national surveys, working groups and programmes focused on improving patient experience and health equity. I have also spoken at professional conferences and international events, sharing both lived experience and strategic insight with clinical leaders, researchers and healthcare teams.
My work goes beyond representing a patient perspective. I facilitate patient panels, focus groups and collaborative discussions that help organisations hear different experiences, challenge assumptions and identify practical opportunities for change. I also work with CROs, research teams and life-sciences organisations to strengthen patient engagement across clinical research, including recruitment, retention, participant burden, trust and the overall experience of taking part in a trial.
At the core of my work is a belief in evidence-based hope. This is the bringing together what the evidence tells us with what people tell us about the realities of living with a condition. I help organisations listen deeply, translate insight meaningfully and embed patient perspectives where they can genuinely influence decisions.
The aim is not simply to demonstrate that engagement has taken place. It is to make that engagement useful creating stronger partnerships with patients and communities and helping organisations design research, policy and healthcare with people, rather than simply for them.
How we can partner together
-
I support organisations to develop patient engagement approaches that are purposeful, inclusive and connected to wider organisational objectives.
This can include building meaningful, sustainable relationships with diverse patient communities especially those historically underrepresented in research and care, reviewing existing approaches, identifying gaps, developing engagement strategies and helping teams understand how lived experience can be embedded more consistently into their work.
-
Experienced keynote and panel speaker at conferences, parliamentary events, webinars and podcasts.
-
Embedding patient voice into every stage of trial design, with a focus on equity, accessibility, and real-world relevance. This includes co-designing and reviewing clinical trial materials, advising on retention strategies and cultural tailoring.
-
Contributing live experience to bid defence meetings, funding applications reviews and research strategy discussions ensuring patient priorities, equity and include are embedded from the outset.
